Jeff, yesterday my wife, who is a court reporter, took
the deposition of a female R.N. with 35 years experience
who was filing a workers comp claim for latex allergy.
She worked with a home health care company and about five
years ago she started having rashes, hives, runny nose
and watering eyes. She didn't know what it was and just
treated it as a normal allergy. A short while back she
went to Shand's in Gainesville to have a root canal done.
After she was anesthetized and a dental dam(right?) put
in place she was numb but felt something just wasn't right,
so she got up and looked in the shiny paper towel dispenser
to see her face. She described herself as looking like
an alien!! The student dentist came back in and after
seeing this called in two professors, two M.D.'s and
a couple of Dentists. Shortly after that they gave her an
injection of Benadryl. They determined then that she had
an allergic reaction to the latex gloves and so forth.
The doctors said that she would have gone into anaphylactic
shock had she not received the Benadryl.
She filed a claim for this on her workers compensation
policy and it's in progress.
She tried to get employment with other home health care
companies and told them she needed a different type of
gloves, etc. but they wouldn't supply these as they said
they didn't know of such a thing as latex allergy.
I wonder how many times this has to happen before somethings
done about it. This lady's occupation is is gone for her.
And to change occupation's at her age isn't easy.
Just a tidbit to share.
Dan
