First Report Explodes Digital TV Myths

NEWTON, Mass., July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Cahners In-Stat Group today introduced its new Digital TV Service. This new service greatly expands the digital TV coverage offered within the company's Multimedia Service since 1991. The new Digital TV Service will provide detailed information on specific market segments such as digital delivery systems and multi-format displays and content, and will also explain the market forces driving the industry's growth.

Reports from Cahners In-Stat Group's new Digital TV Service will cover all eight of the world's major digital TV market segments: terrestrial broadcast networks, broadcast multiple station owners, major cable TV operators, DBS networks, digital telephone services, wireless cable systems, consumer electronics companies, and PCs with tuners or DVD. Coverage will also include the Internet, published media, computer companies, television networks and advertising agencies, and Hollywood and other movie studios.

"Digital TV is an exciting new technology that is at a critical juncture in its development in regard to both technology and the marketplace," said Gerry Kaufhold, principal analyst for Cahners In-Stat Group's new Digital TV Service. "It's a time of upheaval, uncertainty and political gamesmanship. Those that misread the market now will fail."

The Inaugural Report

The first report from Cahners In-Stat Group's new Digital TV Service, Digital Television: Myths and Realities, Vol. 1, tackles the 10 myths surrounding digital TV and explains the realities behind the misconceptions.

According to the report, the number one myth is that digital TV is the convergence of televisions and computers. While the popular opinion is that personal computers will take over consumers' living rooms and become the next high-volume home entertainment device, Cahners In-Stat Group argues that TVs will dominate in-home entertainment.

"'Convergence' has many meanings in many industries, but for digital TV, the appropriate term isn't convergence -- it's diffusion," stated Kaufhold, the report's author. "For the market elements that will be affecting digital TV, diffusion means that technologies, services and delivery systems will cross over from their traditional, stand-alone roles into new, hybrid products, services or delivery systems."

The report goes on to explode misconceptions such as: "It's Hollywood versus the networks," "Digital TV is just happening in the U.S." and "Countries don't need a digital TV policy."

Digital Television: Myths and Realities, Vol. 1 provides a clear understanding of what has been developed, what is not likely to develop and what you can expect near-term in the digital TV market, as well as a longer- term view. This report also provides an in-depth look at national broadcast networks, local broadcast MSOs (multiple station owners), satellite networks, and cable TV systems, including the key players and their agendas, competitors and suppliers.
