Simply breaking them up is no good. But further imposing on the OS baby bill, for example, to release the APIs specs to other baby bills (apps, internet, etc, etc) ___AND___ making the same info available for other companies and software developers at the same time and not after they've been implemented in new internal products, WILL remove the advantage MS has over other companies. IE, they will not have the advantage of early access, or the advantage of not even releasing the complete API specs to other developers.. In essence leveling the play field, which, so far, and apparently, Microsoft loathes and just cannot handle.
CAUTION: This does not eliminate the crappyness in the MS products.. becuase after all they control the OS, and tons of other apps.

Sooo, how does this lead to better MS products again? Maybe you misunderstood the question.

To that, I say to hell with you and your products, MS. I need the same advantage your internal resources have SINCE your product has a monopolistic presence.

Wait a minute. A second ago you said MS was producing inferior products, but then you say they have an unfair advantage which should be removed. So which is it? Are MS products superior to others? Because if they aren't, where is the unfair advantage coming into play?

Kal - if the thousands of software companies wasted the kind of energy you waste on trashing what is, they'd have all gone out of business by now.

Face reality here - THERE IS NO LONGER A MARKET-VIABLE ALTERNATIVE. Today, if you want to make money selling software to PC users, you can GROW UP AND DEAL WITH IT or you can throw your investor's money (and perhaps your's) away trying to beat the system. You decide. Do you feed your family or howl at the moon?

I'm not saying what brought about this situation is good or bad - but a lot of people are getting rich in the software sector. IT'S TOO LATE! THE FAIRY GODMOTHER IS NOT COMING! Whining about MSFT never paid any dividends to stockholders, and it damn sure wastes someone's time, which means it wastes some employer's money.
