from INTC CC notes:

1. inventories declined, but the industry is not yet at the end of the change to JIT.
2. This quarter was the bottom for gross margins. Next quarter will be higher.
3. equip purchases for 1998 were guided down to 4.5B$ (from 5.0B$), because they want to spend less on 0.25 micron. But they are accelerating the 1999 move to 0.18 micron.
4. Overall, I thought it was a "we see light at the end of the tunnel" CC.

Interesting that Compaq says margins are great with cheap computers (as long as you sell a lot of them).

So, who is going to benefit most if INTC (and MU and other semis) concentrate their 98 and 99 equip orders on smaller line widths, rather than any new fabs or 300 mm?

Judy, I agree that the rally will run out of steam, thus my scenario of a minimelt late this Autumn. But there is a nice party going on in the meanwhile.
