so a large block followed by a down tick is labeled a "sell"

The dynamic in the Nasdaq (where the MM set the prices) is:

1) A seller sells a large block to a MM at his bid. No downtick happens yet.

2) The MM now has extra inventory which he needs to get rid of. So he lowers his ask in an attempt to clear it out. Hence the downtick.

Of course the dynamic is somewhat different in floor systems.

acidman, you said > If someone were to sell 1,000,000 shares at the open, dont you think the price would go down just a litle for a moment.<<

Sure, more than a little. I'm not trying to argue, but am trying to learn how you label a trade a "sell". It seems so simple, but is it?
I guess there is no real surefire way, except to find out from the
broker who placed the order first, seller or buyer.
