Michael - I guarantee that GSM does use a form of power control. But that isn't where the savings from CDMAOne come from.

I agree, but my point was that in an isolated cell GSM is driven by transmit noise, ambient noise, and worst case noise spikes, whereas CDMA is driven by other users signals masquerading as noise. Thus, transmit noise is not an issue with CDMAOne.

In a more philosophical vein, in an isolated system with constant data rate CDMA actually underperforms GSM significantly in almost every way because every user is interfered with by sqrt(number of other users), whereas (assuming perfectly square filters) TDMA suffers from no interference. However, we aren't in an isolated system and filters aren't square and CDMA is more flexible about transmission data rates (and therefore corresponding power.) and CDMA doesn't have to design for such high noise spikes as GSM.

As I've said before, I'd love to see a real link budget comparison so I don't have to make assumptions about the squareness of the filters, etc. . But nobody is talking.
