A new era dawns in the Workstation Market- [From the Gartner Group] Ken: The larger [ NT workstation] the pie the bigger the piece for Dell and I like that. ----------------------------------------------------------------------El Nino Effect Comes to Workstation Market ---------------------------------------------------------------------- San Jose, California; May 11, 1998- Just as the El Nino phenomenon has effected the global climate, Intel/Microsoft technologies will change the workstation global climate as early as 1998, according to Dataquest. "In that final quarter [1997], for the first time there were more Windows NT units shipped than UNIX-based systems, representing 55 percent of the total volume compared to 44.6 percent for UNIX workstations," said Peter ffoulkes, director and principal analyst for Dataquest's Advanced Desktop and Workstations program. "Although the market penetration by revenue remains about half that of the unit shipments, this signal event heralds a fundamental shift in the balance of power, setting the scene for significant change in 1998." After adding higher-performance Intel microprocessors, larger memory configuration beyond 512MB, and graphic system improvements from various vendors, the new generation Windows NT workstation will seriously challenge the midrange workstation market, Mr. ffoulkes said. In addition, 1998 will witness Silicon Graphics Inc.'s anticipated entry into the Windows NT workstation market, leaving Sun Microsystems Inc. to stand alone, he said. It is evident that the workstation landscape will have a different appearance in 1998. Although the RISC/UNIX market will be substantial for the foreseeable future, Intel/Microsoft workstation vendors will be in the driver's seat, Mr. ffoulkes said.
