More: INTERVIEW - Claflin to split roles with 3Com's CEO NEW YORK, July 15 (Reuters) - In a move to bolster its senior management team, 3Com Corp. <COMS.O> on Wednesday named Bruce Claflin, a former top Digital Equipment executive, to the newly created post of president and chief operating officer. Claflin is a seasoned sales and marketing executive who ran personal computer businesses at both Digital Equipment Corp. and International Business Machines Corp. Claflin will oversee worldwide operations on a day-to-day basis at 3Com, a $5.4 billion computer network equipment maker, supervising each of the company's four main business units, the company said in a statement. He will start work on August 10. Chairman and Chief Executive Eric Benhamou will continue to drive the company's strategic, financial and technological directions, the company said. "When Eric presented the opportunity, it was a short discussion," Claflin said in an interview following the announcement. Benhamou, who also took part in the interview, said Claflin brings top-level management experience at large corporations and a strong entrepreneurial track record to 3Com -- a rare combination among high technology executives. Claflin brings a wide knowledge of the computer industry and is familiar with many of 3Com's key customers, he said. "Claflin will work with me closely on strategy matters," Benhamou said. "The two jobs will not be compartmentalized." Claflin said he shared a common cultural outlook with 3Com managers and was impressed with the market opportunities that lie ahead for 3Com as the convergence of networks for voice and data communications continues to accelerate. Claflin said he was first contacted by 3Com about the position in May and that his hiring was settled by early July. He said in March he notified Compaq Computer Corp, which had agreed to acquire Digital, that he planned to seek work elsewhere after the merger. The merger was completed in June. He previously was Digital's Senior Vice President for Worldwide Sales and Marketing, where he led the 12,000 employee sales organization for Digital, a $13 billion company. He joined Digital in November 1995 and first was charged with turning around its PC business. He pushed the company to drop its its failing efforts to enter the consumer PC business and focus instead on corporate computer systems, which eventually restored the PC business to profitability. Prior to that Claflin held a number of positions at IBM where he headed the team that introduced the company's highly successful ThinkPad laptop computer line, among other roles. Claflin plans to move to California, to live near 3Com's headquarters in Santa Clara, leaving his family behind in Massachusetts for a year while his daughter finishes high school, he said. Asked to describe his compensation, Claflin said that it would include both salary and a "risk component" in the form of 3Com equity, but declined to offer details. In June, 3Com reported that fiscal fourth-quarter earnings rose 52 percent, edging ahead of expectations, and executives declared a turning point after a difficult year in which the company merged with U.S. Robotics. The company had lost several key Robotics executives since the merger and the company's integration into 3Com. Benhamou said Claflin's arrival will allow him to devote more energies to strengthening 3Com's relations with key partners Microsoft Corp. and Siemens AG and raising the company's profile by increasing Benhamou's public roles.
