Patti, once it gets into the hard-core engineering issues of magnet building, my knowledge drops fast. I am learning along with you here. My guess is that the superconducting medium goes around the iron core and from the electrons running around the core, the magnetic field is generated. The four-post issue is another complication as I don't know how they are integrated. As Admiral Stockdale said, "I think I'm running out of gas here."
