Duncan, there are obviously two schools of thought about global warming. There are still some scientists who do not believe it is caused by humans, although the trend is that more and more of them believe it is, not the other way around.

While we are waiting for more conclusive proof, certainly there are positive things that we can do like try to stop the destruction of rain forests, switch away from fossil fuels, and stop polluting and wasting the world's resources. These are good, constructive things to do whether there is human-caused global warming or not, because there are more of us, and a finite supply of resources. Also, the extinction of species is sad and often unnecessary. Many of the species dying with the rain forests have never even been catalogued, and may have had medicinal uses which could benefit us greatly.

Your entire position on global warming is a Libertarian one. It is not based on science, or caution, or the realization that the planet is small and getting smaller, and that we are all in this together. "Spaceship earth" may be a cliche, but it is true--we are spinning through space on a planet that is reaching its capacity to support life. Your ideology is based totally on capitalism and utter and complete selfishness. A hundred and seven people have now died in the Texas heatwave. Maybe the climate is just warming, and maybe we are causing it. Either way, life is precious, and it would certainly do no harm to take this seriously. That is prudence, not emotional alarmism.
