Standards thoughts...

with 15mm zips, it is essentially a standard. I would like to see IOM stop the zip advertising on TV. People already know that they need a zip.

I'd like IOM to spend some money in collecting peripheral DRIVER files in one web site. Maybe they can offer lycos some money to go hunt down web sites that hold drivers.

Driver files are the ONE and ONLY reason why 1.44mb files will NOT disappear. They are "free" upgrades. but they consume a lot of time upgrading and changing and keeping things straight.

Do you know how many printers, inkjets, scanners, motherboards, bios, graphics cards, etc. are created every year? And lots are discontinued immediately, with no support.

Most companies support their products via web site, but It would be nice to have a zip disk with the ANNUAL drivers compiled. Because drivers change the 1st year, it wouldn't make sense to burn the info onto CD until all drivers are final. With zip, the drivers can change easily.

Someone want to start an internet business? I bet you can charge companies for this type of service. Then get IOM to give you $1mm worth of zip disks free (about 800k disks?) and start distributing the software.

If there is one thing that will increase zip sales and tail off 1.44mb sales, this driver issue is it. My solution is just a quick thought.

CDRW vs zip ... CDRW right now is too slow on write. Good for LIsts of data, but not daily transfers of small (4-40mb) files. I think it fits a separate niche. competition with Jaz/Jaz2 is problematic. Jaz 1 /2 disks need to be 1/2 price to be competitive.

Still positive on IOM long term.

Short term, don't like.

ps
economics on clik! drive is very good right now. No flash ram will reach its price point for several years. This is because majority of flash is used in cell phones which sells millions, vs cameras which sells hundred of thousands.

Otherwise, you will have what Rocky projected...a dramatic lowering of flash prices, and you don't want to own flash makers at that point. But volume simply is not there.
