What happened to Cosmo - from today's WSJ Interactive:

Landing on his feet: Microsoft Corp. continues to swoop up computing's biggest brains. The latest example: Kai-Fu Lee, the former Apple Computer Inc. luminary who has been leading Cosmo, a unit of Silicon Graphics Inc. that is trying to bring three-dimensional graphics to the Web.

As reported here last month, Sony Corp. had signed a letter of intent to buy Cosmo. But somewhat mysteriously, the deal fell through and SGI is shutting down the 100-employee unit. Mr. Lee, who made it clear from the start that he wouldn't go to Sony, didn't spend long sending out resumes. Microsoft immediately hired him for its research unit, where he will be director of advanced interactive systems. There he joins a distinguished list of Apple refugees, including researcher Linda Stone and Steve Capps, who helped design the Macintosh interface and the Apple Newton.
