Headsets for Security and Vendor Personnel

Business/Technology Editors

STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 16, 1998--

Active Noise Reduction Technology Improves Intelligibility of

Communications

Noise Cancellation Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:NCTI) today
announced that the Baltimore Ravens Organization will outfit its
entire security staff as well as vendor personnel with ProActive(TM)
headsets. The headsets utilize "Anti-Noise" technology to
electronically reduce low-frequency background noise that masks speech
intelligibility.
Low frequency noise, generated by engines, motors, fans, or a
roaring stadium crowd, is a scientifically-proven detriment to speech
intelligibility. This phenomenon, known as the "upward spread of
masking" has been demonstrated in many studies. Therefore, in an arena
or stadium setting, it is very difficult to understand radio
communications unless the background noise is electronically reduced.
"The ProActive headset delivers the most intelligible
communications of any headset we've tried," said Jobie Waldt,
Assistant Facilities Director Baltimore Ravens. "The noise
cancellation at the ear makes all the difference and we are pleased to
provide this technology to our personnel who often transmit and
receive crucial information."
The ProActive headset features active noise reduction (ANR), which
is the electronic coupling of a noise wave with its exact mirror image
to cancel the noise. A microphone in each earpiece of the headset
senses background noise at the user's ear. That information is sent to
an electronic controller where an "anti-noise" wave is generated and
coupled with the offensive noise to cancel it. This technology was
originally developed for military and aviation applications where
communications are critical. Military and aviation headsets containing
this technology cost as much as $1,200.
Competitive headsets that are called "noise canceling" refer only
to the boom microphone. These headsets clean noise from the speech
that is being transmitted through the microphone but don't improve
incoming speech intelligibility. The ProActive headset, in addition to
providing background noise cancellation at the ear, also features a
high-quality noise canceling boom microphone.
Noise Cancellation Technologies, Inc. has extensive expertise in
the area of headsets and is the creator of many high-performance
active noise reduction headset lines for a variety of consumer,
commercial and industrial applications. The company is a leading
technology developer specializing in the utilization of sound and
signal waves to reduce noise, improve signal-to-noise ratio and
enhance sound quality. For more information, refer to the Company's
