Scott, very persuasive and well written response. You should send it to Duffy. Your vision is impressive.

Scott

Good discussion!

The old networks for voice are dying hard, but when they start to fall out of grace it will happen fast (just beginning now!)

I understand why the big wire carriers don't want to change. Everything is obsolete! And so much money to spend on upgrading the entire network!

I have to admit, I love change!

Eric

Scott - good points - but don't discount the shared value of the LEC investment in "old" technology yet - they're not about to wander off into irrelevance or obscurity by giving up their lock on the local loop by letting "Joe Consumer" bypass their switching fabric without a fight.

Look for the "universal service" banner to be waved in the face of Congress when voice over IP threatens the golden egg-laying goose of those "eternity depreciation" class 5 end offices and the loops.

And don't completely discount those who believe OC192 bandwidth for ATM is just scratching the surface of potential capacity.

Yes, voice is data - ultimately, everything is data. The driving force in all of these issues will ultimately be marketplace economics, and in this "quasi-competitive" local marketplace, there are influences that simply don't yield to technical rationality.
