David Thursday July 16 11:16 PM ET IBM Signs Deal With CyberCash At Internet World By Mel Duvall, ZDNet IBM Corp. has faced the fact that Secure Electronic Transaction payment systems are not catching on in North America. Big Blue, which has been one of the staunchest supporters of SET, announced Wednesday that it had signed an agreement with CyberCash Inc. to integrate its Secure Sockets Layer-based payment systems with the next version of the IBM Payment Server. The deal means version 1.2 of the IBM Payment Server, due out in August, will be able to handle both SET and Secure Sockets Layer credit-card payments. Until now, IBM's server handled only SET transactions, which are still in the pilot phase. Karl Salnoske, IBM's general manager for electronic commerce, said the company still firmly believes SET will become the preferred method of conducting commerce over the Internet. However, it accepts the fact that SET needs time to mature. "The important thing here is to give merchants and bankers a full set of choices," he said. "Over time, they may want to add SET and digital wallet offerings, but we all know now that it will take time to develop." Erica Rugullies, an electronic commerce analyst at Giga Information Group Inc., agreed that SET will take hold eventually but said IBM should have made this move months ago. "They put all their eggs into the SET basket, and now they're having to play catch-up," she said. The CyberCash deal, which was announced at Internet World in Chicago, was among a number of announcements made by Big Blue on the e-commerce front Wednesday. IBM said it formed 11 partnerships with leading e-commerce players to expand the capabilities of its Net.Commerce platform. Gartner Group Inc. analyst Roy Satterthwaite said IBM is playing catch-up on this front as well as to Microsoft Corp., which has announced more than 50 partners for its Site Server Commerce Edition. Companies integrating their products into the Net.Commerce platform are Business Evolution Inc.; CommercialWare, a division of ASA International Ltd.; Fisher Technology Group; Garg Data International Inc.; Impac Technology Inc.; Industri-Matematik International Corp.; Intelligent Interactions Corp.; Narrative Communications Corp.; Net Perceptions Inc.; NetGravity Inc.; and PersonalLogic Inc. Separately, IBM announced it will team up with Ameritech Corp., Cisco Systems Inc. and Northwestern University to build a research center in the Chicago area to focus on the Internet 2 project.
