If the patents are necessary for Intel to produce it's Merced processor, it is irrelevant if they exit the graphics business. They will have to buy the patents from S3 or license the technology. As we all know, Intel sells great volumes of chips and we are talking a lot of money. Of course, this is all based on the whole patent thing being true. At this point, I highly doubt it since the stock hasn't moved and even a half-believable rumor moves stocks.
