SkyPerfecTV says subscribers to top 800,000 soon
TOKYO, July 16 (Reuters) - Japanese satellite broadcaster Japan Digital Broadcasting Services Inc, or SkyPerfecTV, said on Thursday its total subscribers would exceed 800,000 ''within a couple of weeks.''
Hajime Unoki, chairman of SkyPerfecTV, told a group of journalists the multi-channel satellite broadcaster had recently enjoyed healthy growth, but that it was less than what he wanted to see.

The company, formed in May through a merger of media tycoon Rupert Murdoch's Sky Broadcasting (JSkyB) and Japan's PerfecTV, needs between 1.5 million and two million subscribers to recover the money it has spent on capital investment, he said.

SkyPerfecTV had 750,000 subscribers at the end of June -- putting it far ahead of domestic rival DirecTV, which had 140,200 subscribers by June.

Unoki said SkyPerfecTV aimed to expand its number of subscribers to one million this year.

DirecTV, which is partly owned by Hughes Electronics Corp of the United States, launched its multi-channel satellite broadcast service in Japan last December.
