I would say they did not want the JUL 7 1/2 calls to go into money.
I was saying just yesterday that the specialists seems to waste more money keeping a stock down during option expiration that they would loose on the options. But its the principal that counts to them.

Summary of days trading:

As I see it shorts have had their back up against the wall as of lately.

This mornings news announcement (which wasn't really news) came out at 10:14 EST. On my 5 minute chart from 10:15 to 10:20 there were 371,100 shares traded moving the price from 7 7/8 to 8 5/8. I believe this jump was mostly due to some large shorts covering and finally realizing that the sub 7's opportunity is now over.

In the afternoon Vivus held a nice base at the 7 7/8 to 8 1/8 level.

Then suddenly from 3:35 to 3:50 there was a massive sell off or shorting and we slid from 7 15/16 to 7 1/4 on 421,300 shares. The last 10 minutes we bounced back up to as high as 7 5/8 and closed at 7 1/2.

I don't know what triggered the late sell off. I think it could have been the mm as alien said making the 7 1/2 options expire worthless. I we close tomorrow under 7 1/2 then we know for sure why.
