Ever heard of economies of scale.

Stockmeister,

From an OEM's point of view, scale is irrelevant.

Unless Intel is willing to give the chipset, audio and graphics away for free, and cut the CPU price in half, there is no way for an OEM to build an Intel system at MediaGX cost.

BTW: Generally it is considered good practice to end questions with a question mark.

To Stockman & Scumbria:

Maybe there is a way to make all happy. This Q, instead of intel repurchasing shares, maybe they can buy all the MediaGx from NSM. According to "Big Bucks" they are giving them away for free! This way, Intel can maintain/increase market share. This should take it back up to $100 or maybe even $120... yeah thats it.

That way intel doesn't have to worry about lower ASP's. They should be nice and give NSM something though, that way the FTC won't get involved. They could buy him a limo so he can cruise around like Jerry. This way they can cancel all Mendecino/Whitney projects and concentrate on "high margin" Xeon's and raise PII prices back up. Then the whole industry will brighten up and all component prices will go back up across the board and birds will be singing and drinking.
