The purpose of the enzyme is to act as a catalyst to greatly speed up the reaction. It could have, at first, been present in tiny amounts to help the reaction. It was probably introduced in tiny quantities by specialized cells lining the main reaction chamber. As this was an excellent defense mechanism, evolution would have favored the beetle with the greatest control of the reaction, thus eventually favoring a separate chamber. Those mutations that didn't get it right blew up. Presumably, they didn't have offspring. Truly selection of the fittest at it's best.
