[Qwest Up 5% On British Telecom Shortlist Report]

DENVER (Dow Jones)--Qwest Communications International Inc. (QWST) shares were up 5% late Thursday after a news report Thursday said the company was on a shortlist of four U.S. companies that could be chosen to distribute British Telecommunications PLC's (BTY) Concert managed network services in North America.

Tom Friedberg, senior analyst with Janco Partners Inc., a Denver investment banking firm, cited the Financial Times report in explaining the stock rise Thursday.

"There are rumors that it may enter into some sort of partnering arrangement with British Telecom," he said of Qwest.

Lee Wolfe, vice president of investor relations for Qwest, said, "I would certainly acknowledge that that is in the mix today."

However, Wolfe noted that Qwest shares have been rising over the last few days, and he attributed that rise to a meeting with analysts that the company held in New York on July 8.

That has helped cause a rebound from the drop in share price in June after Denver-based Qwest acquired long-distance carrier LCI International Inc., he said. The shares had traded in the upper 20s about a month ago.

Qwest was up 2 1/8 or 5.3%, at 42 1/8 on heavy Nasdaq volume.

The other companies mentioned in the Financial Times article were Bell Atlantic Corp. (BEL), Sprint Corp. (FON) and AT&T Corp. (T).
