Don't the little critters tend to float? They don't quite break the surface tension of the water, and sort of ski around on it.

I've discovered that the little brown Argentine ants which own Southern California aren't especially fond of Fantastik Spray Cleaner. Makes 'em fry right up. I guess they're not into cleanliness.

Thanks Alex. Taht makes sense. I am thinking that their underwater time span is limited somehow, but obviously they have worked it out over the last several billion years. I suspect that if several ants clung to each other, they might create a bubble big enough to keep them alive for several days...
