I don't think the FPU in the K6 is as fast as the one in the PII. This is aggravated by the fact that compilers optimize for the Intel architecture (I believe; Steve Porter could provide better insight here). I think AMD is working on pipelining their FPU (Centaur already did this for the WinChip 2). The 3DNow! instructions are great, if only developers would use them. The problem is that when KNI comes out, AMD may have to scrap 3DNow! and go with KNI. Meanwhile, 3DNow! has been a marketing coup.
