Summit Technology Announces the Launch of the Elite Athlete
Vision Correction Program

Business Wire ~ July 16, 1998 ~ 5:22 pm EST
WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 16, 1998--Summit Technology and the Visual Fitness Institute announced today the launch of the Elite Athlete Vision Correction Program. The program has been designed for world class amateur athletes who are Olympic hopefuls and will be directed by Barry L. Seiller, M.D., Medical Director of the Visual Fitness Institute, the Eye Care Center of Lake County, and Director of Visual Performance for the U.S. Ski, Bobsled, Snowboard, and Luge Teams. The Visual Fitness Institute, established by Seiller, evaluates and prescribes vision correction and trains hundreds of athletes annually including Olympic, professional, and high level amateur athletes. This new program has been developed to bring laser vision correction to elite athletes using the Summit Apex Plus Excimer Laser.

"We are pleased to help athletes gain access to laser vision correction to enhance their competitive performance," said Robert Palmisano, Chief Executive Officer of Summit Technology. "This program for elite athletes will provide access to the finest refractive surgeons in the country," he continued.

On July 31st Dr. Seiller will perform laser vision correction at the Eye Care Center of Lake County on two of the Olympic medal winning members of the U.S. Luge Team and members of the U.S. Ski Team and their coaches and trainers in Vernon Hills, Illinois.

"Visual skills are an essential and frequently overlooked area of athletic performance. Having exceptional eyesight is the cornerstone of these skills," said Seiller. "Today, superior vision is clearly understood to be a performance enhancing attribute for world class athletes. With the latest advances in treatment options, laser vision correction is becoming a popular choice for athletes and individuals with active, demanding lifestyles," he stated.

The Elite Athlete Vision Correction Program has been designed to expand the program developed by Seiller. Seiller, who has been working with world class athletes for many years, understands the performance enhancing possibilities available with vision training, which can lead to vision correction through LASIK PRK, which is a laser vision correction procedure. A number of professional athletes, such as Jeremy Lincoln of the New York Giants, have had their eyes treated recently with the Summit Apex Plus Laser and with this new partnership performance enhancing vision correction will now be available to elite athletes who are Olympic hopefuls.

"After my surgery, I felt as though I added several years to my career. I can actually see the football again from the point of attack," said Jeremy Lincoln, former Chicago Bear and presently with the New York Giants. "I would highly recommend this surgery to anyone serious about enhancing their performance in any sport."

The Visual Fitness Institute, Eye Care Center of Lake County, and Dr. Seiller will be assisting Summit Technology in implementing the Elite Athlete Vision Correction Program nationally at practices and facilities across the U.S. that use the state of the art Summit Apex Plus System for correction of nearsightedness and astigmatism.
