IBM's Number 2! in Software Sales

Dow Jones just reported that Microsoft has now topped IBM in software sales. MSFT has reported $14.48 B in fiscal 1998 revenue, while it is estimated that IBM's revenue is $13.03 B (if considering the same June year end reporting period as MSFT).

The article does note that IBM's total revenue is $78.5 B.

The article does NOT note that IBM's Market Cap is ~$110 B while MSFT has a Market Cap of ~$290 B.

Excellent post George , Motorola is "copper" partnering with AMD

IBM's server designation is ambiguous as IBM designs and markets both IBM PowerPC and INTC CPU based servers .

AAPL's G3 PowerPC desktop success (10 mln iMACs ?) creates a need for higher powered PowerPC's to put on its motherboards for new AAPL servers .

In March , AAPL's S Jobs 1st demo'ed IBM's latest copper PowerPC at NYC's Seybold conference , suggesting AAPL would participate in future IBM PowerPC (copper etc.) improvements.

At that time IBM stated it expected its 1,000 MZ RISC copper PowerPCs would be in IBM servers in late '98 and desktops in 1999 .

The lack of IBM's definitive exclusion of any PowerPCs for AAPL is encouraging . The AIM partnership is still intact and hopefully AAPL will use IBM's other designated PowerPCs in desktops and servers.

It makes sense IBM would not provide AAPL with the same PowerPC it uses in its higher priced PowerPC server lines . Alternatively AAPL can now obtain PowerPCs from Motorola .

IBM fabricates and markets AMD's "INTC look alikes" and coincidentally Motorola will partner its copper technology , including desktop , with AMD:

" Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector and Advanced Micro Devices are due to announce a cross-licensing and development pact Monday that will combine their efforts on next-generation copper-based chip manufacturing, a Motorola representative said. "

Wonder if Motorola will have AMD's Jerry Sanders demo a copper PowerPC CPU for AAPL servers at Monday's Motorola partnership meeting ? :>)

Probably not , but then again you never know who your next tech partner will be .
