A few flavors I'm remotely aware of ...

Red Hat Linux ................. redhat.com
OpenLinux ...................... caldera.com
Debian GNU/Linux .......... debian.org
FreeBSD and Slackware ... cdrom.com
S.u.S.E. Linux ................. suse.com
TurboLinux ..................... turbolinux.com
MkLinux ......................... mklinux.apple.com
LinuxPPC ....................... linuxppc.org

... not to mention Red Hat Extreme Linux for parallel processing. My understanding is that they all have the Linux kernel. Needs vary and each flavor of Linux has it proponents. I see the variety as a strength. Good ol' competition at its best. Innovation is what Bill Gates wants after all. And he's not afraid of a level playing field is he?

Here are some desktops:

xfree86.org
metrolink.com
kde.org

And some hardware:

corelcomputer.com
penguincomputing.com
varesearch.com

And some software:

corel.com
applix.com

And some Linux sites:

li.org
linux.com
linuxnow.com
linuxjournal
linuxresources.com
linuxmall.com
infomagic.com

I think there's room in the world for a better desktop PC. I don't care if it emerges from Linux, JAVA, Jini or a jar of pickled herring.

Business is beginning to wake up. My friends at Boeing tell me that they are not going to buy Windows98. In addition they are extremely unhappy with Word 8.0 and Access.

Corel seems to be embracing Linux. WordPerfect is available and I believe they plan an office suite by the end of the year. I haven't played with my Applix Office Suite a whole lot yet ... but what can I say? It's a spreadsheet, word processor, etc.

But I'm mindlessly rambling again. Reply #8 on the Linux thread from g_m10 references an article containing a RUMOR of Debian and Red Hat merging.

Keep in mind that people on the Linux thread know infinitely more than I do. Are you sorry you asked yet?

Best of luck.
