Eric - they did not break out any revenue by product line. They also indicated that they would no longer breakout Starfire volumes but assured that they would not be capacity constrained going into the next fiscal year.

The growing storage market....EMC a case study
(http://www.theonlineinvestor.com/emc_spotlight.shtml)

From the article: "...Competition is an issue worth watching, with heavyweights Sun Microsystems and Compaq Computer angling for a piece of the fast-growing enterprise storage market..."

"...Higher-margin areas like software and open system storage products are accounting for an increasing percentage of revenues, offsetting the downward pricing pressures common to the data storage business..."

=====================================================================

Let's hope our management has the best business plan to capitalize on this growth area and have the right mix of software and hardware products to take market share from EMC.

With Sunw's purchase of Encore (11/97) they acquired their intelligent storage server product, the Infinity SP40. The SP40 provides consolidated mainframe and open systems disk storage, cross-platform data sharing and a redundant architecture with a built-in storage processor to ensure high availability of stored data. (http://www.sun.com/smi/Press/sunflash/9711/sunflash.971124.2.html)

From what I can tell, SUNW plans to offer new mission-critical services (ie. new intelligent storage products) that leverage technology from their purchase of Encore. They will generate new revenues from IT consulting and software sales (http://www.sun.com/smi/Press/sunflash/9801/sunflash.980128.7.html).

It is not clear to me if this approach is aggressive enough to take market share from EMC. The key is to provide customers storage solutions for cross-platform functionality (ie. Windows NT, Unix, mainframes).

Sunw needs to establish many more company alliances to expand their new service business. They would include joint marketing agreements with companies such as Peoplesoft, SAP and Baan.

Sunw investors will want to keep their eyes open for any new marketing or OEM alliances that continues to expand their presence in this huge new growth market.
