Tom,
If you follow my stance and philosophy on execution and commissions, its pretty simple. Like anything in this world, you get what you pay for. Sure you can find a Lexus 400, the same car at $40k and $42 and there may or may not be a distinction between the services, other benefits of the $42k, but if someone said they have a Lexus 400 for $15k, brand new, you are probably paying someother way or not getting what you should.

Unlimited trades for fixed fee...forget it. i think Afhauser does that. Gary Smith's article mentions his experiences with them. Any decent execution is worth its weight in gold. And they dont come cheap. TAKING a CYBERTRADER OR MBTRADING out of the picture because they are entirely self directed, lets call them 'direct entry' systems, most firms arenot giving you great value although they might offer $10 buck commissions or 'commissionless trading'.

You should check our Gary's Smiths article Penny Wise-Pound Foolish. It addresses this very issue.
If you would like to check it out, let me know, I'll email you a URL or clips of it. Its also a good article regarding disciplined trading.
