From Parents Magazine, August, 1998, issue, by Rachelle Vander Schaaf...

"A Baby born at 35 weeks is almost 13 times more likely to be rehospitalized for jaundice than one born at 40 weeks, say researchers at William Beaumont Hospital, in Royal Oak, Michigan. Jaundice usually occurs at about 3 days of age if a baby's liver fails to excrete bilirubin, a yellow molecule that forms when blood cells break down. If bilirubin builds up in the blood, the baby's face turns yellowish. 'The earlier a baby is born, the more difficult it is for his liver to get rid of bilirubin,' says lead study author M. Jeffrey Maisels, M.D.

Typically, jaundice peaks when a baby is about 5 days old and clears up over the next three to five days, as the liver matures. But if the yellowish color spreads downward, the baby may have a higher, potentially dangerous level of bilirubin. He will likely be monitored with daily blood tests on an outpatient basis; if the levels don't fall, he may be hospitalized for treatment under a fluorescent light--called phototherapy--that converts bilirubin into a more easily excreted substance. 'It usually solves the problem within a day,' says Dr. Maisels."
