E-tailing: Amazon.com's push to profits
By Larry Dignan

An excerpt:

Analysts said Amazon.com isn't
profitable yet, but will make gobs of
money quickly once it does show some
earnings. Keith Benjamin, an analyst at
BancAmerica Robertson Stephens estimates
that Amazon.com will post a loss of
$1.12 in 1998, lose 61 cents a share in
1999, show a profit of 23 cents a share
in 2000, and rake in 88 cents a share in
2001.

"The issue isn't the timing of profits,"
said Steven Horen, an analyst with
NationsBanc Montgomery Securities. "The
issue is whether the company will grow
earnings rapidly."

But a lot of things have to go right for
Amazon.com and other retailers to show
profit growth that quickly.

Here are a few things that could keep
Amazon.com profits from jumping to warp
speed ...

And goes on to list reasons that Amazon may have trouble
growing earnings: mainly increased competition from B&N and
growing pains due to high growth. Various figures on
growth expectations and challenges are cited.

There was a time period where I didnt miss one post, news story, or trade quote on this beast known as AMZN.. The remainder of my funds (which is paltry compared to what is was) are now invested in quality such as INTC, MSFT, CPQ, TLAB, CYMI, AMAT, CYMI.. Heavily weighted in semi conductors, but with no margin.. Dont need to be rich quick, no longer trading out of boredom....

It has been a painful yet liberating experience.. Having come to terms with my current position (at least partially)bjust wanted to let you avid AMZN followers who have watched my demise know I am alive and doing ok.

While I will probably never have any position in AMZN or any other net stock again, I will enjoy watching this thing fall into chap 11 even though I am not participating..

Never think you are smarter than the market. It will kill you.. While I cant condone shorting any longer, for those that try I wish you the best. Just make sure your position is very small relative to the size of your portfolio.. It is amazing how a triple can wipe you out if it goes the wrong way... Good luck... Hating the zon for the rest of my life... Sucks being right, just not at the right time.............
