Pro-MPEG Forum.......................................

tvbeurope.com

Switching topics now -- although the following is in fact very much related to Sony and Beta SX -- I would like to draw your attention to the establishment, at NAB, of the Pro-MPEG Forum. Companies involved in its establishment included Tektronix, BBC, Hewlett-Packard, Sony, Snell & Wilcox, IBM, Quantel, FAST, Pinnacle, Thomson Broadcast, ECI Telecom and Media 100.

The Forum is dedicated to 'realising the full potential offered by MPEG-2 as an open, international standard for compressed digital content. Widespread adoption and deployment of MPEG-2 into the professional environment demands interoperable, multi-vendor implementations of the standard -- not only across peer equipment, but across applications.'

Chairman Dr Nick Wells said, "The Pro-MPEG Forum will provide a forum for members to work together to ensure end-to-end interoperability. The Forum is open to manufacturers, end users and component suppliers." The first General Assembly of the Forum was held in early July, at which working groups were established to focus on specific topics including an interoperability demonstration targeted for NAB 99. TV/COM uses C-Cube encoders...............................

TV/COM serves DVB
TV/COM International has released its DVB Data Server which directly supports program providers seeking to add value to their consumer video service or private network by adding data services such as news, weather, sports, financial and Internet content. It accepts data input from a variety of sources, packages them in DVB format with appropriate programme information, and delivers a DVB ASI (Asynchronous Serial Interface) transport stream that is multiplexed with other DVB/MPEG-2 services to be delivered to a consumer set top box or PC.
The DVB Data Server is suitable for a number of applications including EPG generation and distribution, remote code downloads, playout scheduling, PSI/SI generation and DVB data formatting. With an aggregate output rate of 20 Mbps, these data applications can run simultaneously.
