The BJP owes its electoral gains over the years to the "lunatic fringe". How
can it get off the tiger now? Besides, the liberal faces in the BJP have more
or less served their purpose. They are going to be a hindrance rather than a
help to the hawks as time rolls on. The organizational changes in recent times
in fact, point to a trend wherein the "lunatic fringe" is all set to become the
"lunatic core". So much for the party "trying to distance from the lunatic
fringe" bit. Bhagwati's advice may be good, but the religious bigots will have
no time to listen to him.

For the same reason, the men and women of letters that will be attracted to
the party are more likely to be of the type whose intellect would serve to sustain
their prejudices and bigotry, not to overcome them.

During the days leading to India's independence, Nehru is reported to have
confessed to Mountbatten that the members of the Congress party were good
agitators, but had no clue about administration. Replace "Congress" by "BJP"
and "agitators" by "demagogues", and you'll get a fairly good picture of today's
situation.
