Compaq/Alpha servers

<For starters, the Houston company, (Compaq), is cutting prices on existing Alpha servers by up to 25 percent to make room for new, fully configured models. The company will also announce plans to offer clusters of lower-end Alpha servers with a choice of RAID or shared-disk storage arrays.

Key to Compaq's Alpha plans will be new Alpha processors, the EV6 and EV8.

Due in September, the 600MHz EV6 will nearly double application performance over the current EV56, Compaq officials said.

The EV8, due in 2001, will be offered with clock speeds in excess of 1GHz and will reach processing speeds of up to 200 million transactions per second, they said.

Compaq plans initially to add the EV6 chip to the current AlphaServer 8000 line, which will be upgraded with new processors at least three times by 2001.

The refresh should quash concerns over the long-term viability of Alpha in the wake of Compaq's Digital acquisition, according to Mary McDowell, vice president and general manager of the Server Product Division at Compaq.>

jb, no you won't become a pariah. I sometimes forget those also. In fact, I didn't know what those meant until about 6 months ago, somebody told me. Dale
