SALTING INSURANCE PROGRAM ABC ANNOUNCES NEW MINE SALTING INSURANCE PROGRAM June 23, 1997 (Washington, DC)-June 23-Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) president John Jennings, today, announced a new ABC sponsored insurance program designed to protect ABC contractors from costs associated with union attempts to put them out of business. "We are proud to offer this new ABC member benefit. It is a solution to the union salting crisis facing open shop contractors." Jennings said. "Salting insurance will protect ABC members from economic harassment and intimidation by union salts." The ABC Salting Insurance program is available to all ABC members beginning July 1, 1997. The insurance plan will be sold by ABC member property and casualty insurance agents and includes either $500,000 or $1 million in annual coverage for legal fees and 90 percent of back pay awards related to National Labor Relations Act unfair labor practice charges brought against a company. "This insurance program is an industry first. There is no comparable program anywhere," Jennings said. "We're excited about this insurance program because union salting is not about employment; it's about harassment and union attempts to drive open shop companies out of business." As a part of the salting insurance program, ABC member attorneys will serve on legal defense teams to argue cases for covered companies. These attorneys will have a proven track record arguing salting cases. Salting is a major economic threat to open shop construction companies. "Construction workers are sent by their unions to infiltrate, or 'salt' open shop companies in order to file unfair labor practice charges against the employer with the National Labor Relations Board," Jennings said. "It costs these union salts nothing to file frivolous charges against an open shop company, but without insurance the financial burden of defending against these charges can cost contractors their businesses." The NLRB finds the overwhelming majority of such claims to be frivolous. Employers however, are forced to pay thousands of dollars to defend their companies. Salting insurance will protect companies against the costs associated with faulty NLRB charges. "This new ABC insurance program is a unique member benefit that will help alleviate the economic hardships associated with defending companies against union salting," Jennings said.
