IBM, STMicroelectronics to exchange, jointly develop IP cores

Particularly interesting information on IBM asic as they go
after the SoC market and compete directly with LSI.

LaRosa said the deal was of strategic importance to IBM and would create
the "largest virtual design team and manufacturing engine for system-on-chip in
the world."

This agreement is currently focused on the disk drive arena,
and puts it directly against the Symbios/LSI merger. But it
also is expected that the agreement will be extended.

STM and IBM announced they would share PowerPC microcontrollers from
IBM and specialized DSP and read-write channel cores from STM (formerly
SGS-Thomson Microelectronics) for application in hard-disk-drive data
storage.
The companies will also co-develop additional cores to help them in
designing-jointly or independently-chips for that market.
