Congressman Ron Paul's ballot access bills
will be introduced as amendments on July 20

* Immediate action required! Call or fax your Representative

There is an 85% chance that Congressman Ron Paul's (R-TX)
ballot access reform bills will finally be introduced in the U.S. House
as amendments on Monday, July 20 -- so Libertarians must take immediate
action, the Libertarian Party said today.

"It is imperative that all Libertarian Party members call or
fax their Representatives on Monday morning or early Monday afternoon,
to urge them to vote for these two important amendments," said LP
National Director Ron Crickenberger. "We only have a narrow window of
opportunity, so you must act immediately."

Paul expects to introduce two bills -- HR 2477 (the Voter
Freedom Act) and HR 2478 (the Debate Freedom Act) -- as "perfecting
amendments" to the Shays-Meehan campaign reform substitute bill, which
the House plans to debate on late Monday afternoon, said Paul's
legislative director, Joe Becker.

Paul had hoped to introduce one of his ballot access reform
bills as an amendment on June 17, but the House ran out of time for the
scheduled debate, and then went into recess.

Now, the House has reduced the number of proposed amendments to
the Shays-Meehan bill from more than 250 to only 55 -- giving Paul's
amendments a much greater chance of actually being considered, said
Becker.

When you call, there's one important lobbying tip to remember,
said Crickenberger: "Ask your Representative to support Congressman
Paul's two amendments to the Shays-Meehan Bill. Don't use the original
HR 2477 or HR 2478 names or numbers, since they're being introduced in
the form of amendments to another bill."

Congressman Paul's first amendment (the former HR 2477) would
end the political discrimination against third parties in federal
elections. The amendment will require states to establish
non-discriminatory standards for candidates for president, U.S. House,
and U.S. Senate, and would dramatically reduce the number of petition
signatures required to get third-party presidential candidates on the
ballot.

Paul's second amendment (the former HR 2478) would prohibit
presidential candidates who accept taxpayer-provided matching funds
from participating in debates that exclude candidates qualified for the
ballot in at least 40 states.

"The Libertarian Party does not support the Shays-Meehan Bill
that Paul's amendments would be attached to," noted Crickenberger.
"However, a strong vote in favor of his amendments will send a powerful
message for ballot access reform, and would make it more likely that
Paul's original bills can be successfully re-introduced at a later
date.

"That's why it is so important for Libertarians to put pressure
on the House to vote in favor of the Paul amendments to the
Shays-Meehan Bill -- and to act on Monday morning or early Monday
afternoon!"

One other tip, cautioned Crickenberger: "Don't lobby your
Representative by e-mail about this bill, since you can't be sure they
will get the message before the vote. Use the phone or fax, so your
comments get through immediately!"

The telephone number and fax number of your Representative are
available at www.house.gov.

Or, call the Congressional switchboard at (202) 225-3121 or
(202) 224-3121 and ask to speak to the office of the Representative
from your district. (Don't know your Representative's name? The Capitol
switchboard operator can tell you. Just provide your city and state.)
