This is correct ... Current aluminum interconnect technologies have about
.5% copper in with the aluminum primarily to improve electromigration. I
have personally worked with even higher concentrations (2%-3% copper).

I agree that their situation is desperate. An alliance with Mot is a good one, depending on the details IMHO.

Copper is untried, and I am sure problematic. With AMD's awful execution of the 0.35 Micron debacle, it looks like they are setting up to play catch up with 0.18 +Cu. By themselves they would have no chance, With the Mot and possible help from IBM they may be able to ship by Q2 99 (even if it is not manufactured at AMD).
