Re el viejo C rdenas y Pemex - have you ever read Graham Greene's 'The Lawless Roads'? True story of his undercover trip in '38 from el DF to Veracruz, then down the coast in a small ship, up the river to Villahermosa, then through Chiapas checking on the state of the Church following the persecution of Calles. His cover was that he wanted to see Palenque, but really he was there on behalf of the English RC Church, and was on the little tramp steamer when the Pemex 'deal' was announced. The crew then unloaded at the next stop bales of propaganda leaflets that had obviously been sitting around for a while - the nationalizaci¢n had been planned for a long time. Great descriptions of San Crist¢bal and other places. It's out of print, last I asked.
