From UK Sunday newspapers:

It is now emerging that viagra will be prescribable by GPs (PCPs) in UK, assuming that it is licensed, but only as a private prescription. There is a law that allows GPs to write a private prescription provided that there is no cheaper alternative available.

As far as I can see, this means effectively that viagra will be on sale over the counter but you need a private prescription from a GP to buy it. If anyone wants it free (eg if they are unemployed) or wish to pay only the minimal NHS prescription charge of œ5.60 they will need their GP to refer them to specialist. Not quite clear how this will pan out, but should reduce pressure on GPs and specialists and presumably act to depress demand for viagra through the NHS.

Re previous message. This was Vivus' most recent press release on their web site, from Saturday 10 July. I have no recollection of this being commented on on thread - perhaps I was asleep.
