Here's what I found...

I did the Alta Vista search, and found a link which told you how to get two discounts. The first was a $10 off your first order, but it expired on April 30th. The second was $3.00 discount, but it says only one per customer and for a limited time only.

As far as the freebies and cheapies from Columbia House go, I've also taken advantage of those deals. Yes, it brings the average price of the CD down, but I also find I end up getting CDs I don't really want or wouldn't buy otherwise. Case in point, I think I have about six CDs downstairs from CH that are still in the cellophane. So was it really a bargain? Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

One other important thing to factor in is the broadness of selection. Compact Connection will have to offer a good variety of new and old titles to get people to pay for the card. That will be one of the first things I look at before buying a card.

Here is a partial posting from WiseOwl ref competitive pricing:

"Also ( this is me , again ), I asked my wife how much we pay for CD's. She buys through Columbia House and BMG. She says that on average, we pay about 7 or 8 dollars per CD, averaging out the "free" and cheap ones with the ones we pay full price ($16.95) for. So, I guess I'm not at all convinced that the CC prices are competitive."

A TSIG investor friend that is not an SI member asked me to post the following response. It's a good one.

Response from a former loyal BMG and Colombia House member:

No news here. BMG and Colombia House run many sales on their CDs, but selection can be a problem. For instance, I have not been able to find some New Age album selections (e.g., Fresh Aire and Loreena McKennitt) with either BMG or Colombia House. Sale brochures tend to feature many albums that I would not purchase anyway. Although both clubs now take credit cards, have toll-free order numbers and internet sites, delivery still takes 4-6 weeks.

And Colombia House has a minimum CD buy requirement at full retail (16.98 and up) prices before you are allowed to take advantage of sale items. One last point, BMG and Colombia House require that the member send back a response card at least once a month. If the member forgets to respond, is on vacation, or the card gets lost in the mail, the selection of the month will be sent out anyway. One more hassle to deal with. I recently quit both BMG and Colombia House and have opted for the CCI music card. Now I purchase what I want, when I want. I plan to send out music cards as presents at Christmas this year to my teenage nieces and nephews.
