William Hunt. Re: "Could this be the end of the stupid price wars that we have seen this year?" I believe it is.

I remember the big PR push HP made last year about being the #1 PC company by 2000. There was no way with HP's cost structure they could do it, IMHO.

Then comes this, "However, he (Platt) was more pessimistic about overtaking rival Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ), whom he called "a tougher competitor," especially given the ongoing price wars in the PC market." The sound you just heard was Lew Platt blinking.

This is indeed good news. Another piece of good news IMHO is CPQ is selling direct both in WSJ ads to business and ads to consumers on TV. No one has commented on this here, but this is a major change in strategy, which will make them competitive with Dell. When CPQ can reflect this change in their earnings/margins, then the street will give them credit for it. Probably not before.

Pretty sure it is Bill. I posted similar info a week or two ago. There was an article (Business Week I think) where Platt was all upset about HP's continue problems on the cost side. He was also talking about the PC business and the distinct impression I got was that being number 1 was now much less important than being a leading player with 'profitability' in this niche.
