I know you didn't address this question to me ... but, I thought I would
take a try at the answer. My assessment is that Intel's .25um process will
not be able to produce laptop PII's at 400+mhz due to power issues. I would
expect to see that speed available from Intel's .18um process. This process
should be available at least by Sept '99. Thus, I think it will be at least
one year before you see 400mhz laptop PII's.

I think this will happen in two steps.

Intel may target DIXON - with 256K L2 on-chip cache running at full processor speed - as a "booster" for the high end portable market. That transition can start anytime since DIXON is now out of the fab and functional. Realistically, I wouldn't expect a DIXON to be in a notebook until Q4.

The DIXON CPU would run at the same speeds 266 Mhz and maybe as high as 300 MHz - possibly with a 100 MHz bus. The full CPU speed cache may give performance "approaching" today's 400 Mhz Pentium II's with half CPU speed cache. especially for applications where a 256K cache is adequate.

The second step will be the startup of the 0.18 micron process - which will happen late Q199 or early Q299.

After that time, Intel will be able to provide 350 or 400 Mhz Mobile "Coppermine" devices with low enough power to run at those speeds in a notebook PC. So, look for lare summer or early fall of 1999 for the advent of notebook PCs with that kind of speed.
