You're absolutely correct using that analogy Dog. This kind of research could be done in someone's basement. The key ingredient is having the smarts to figure out the vector puzzle; not lots of equipment. There's NO question that this puzzle will be solved sometime. Maybe someone at CYGS has solved it..who knows. Guess we'll know for sure next week.
