I agree with Rob S. that margins will always be puny and possibly never justify the 6
billion market cap, but AMZN will not chapter-11 in the foreseeable future.

This is a time will tell. Let's revisit it in a year or so.

But at some point AOL stopped giving floppies away and started reapping the benefits of having become the number one on-line service.

AOL even did what once was considered an impossibility for ISPs: hiked their rates.

Same with AMZN. Right now a price hike would be suicidal, but once people have grown accustomed to Amazon.com book reviews (think Oprah book of the month folks) and other niceties, they might not mind prices $0.50-$1.50 above the lowest available.

Alomex:

One difference. AOL,once you were suckered in with the free diskette, got subscription fees from you which were next to impossible to stop paying (since they made it slightly harder to quit their damned service, than to streak naked down the street in Iran shrieking "USA is #1, Free Love to all" and not be killed!) No offense intended to any Iranians, streakers, lovers of the USA or advocates of free loving. You're captive to AOL, not to AMZN.

Actually, there are a ton more differences as well. But that one will do.
