Just took a real quick look at CDNow and did a little comparison shopping. Again, I focused on Elton John since he has dozens and dozens of both new and old releases.

This may be due to the fact that the CCI site is beta, but it took almost a 2 and a half minutes to download all the selections. The screen flickered the whole time during download and was basically unusable. They'll need to correct this or people will lose patience and go elsewhere. Again, hopefully that's just due to the fact that the site's in Beta test.

When I did the search on CDNow for Elton John, the first screen that appeared was very confusing. It was not a list of all his albums, but rather listed 2 or 3 titles and indicated there were 64 others. I wasn't sure what to click on to see the rest. Once I figured that out, it took about 20 seconds to download all the selections. They did have more selections, but primarily in the area of imports. The selections were very well organized and separated into sections based on whether they were singles, imports, etc.

A major difference between how the selections are displayed is that CCI displays the album cover of the selection on that main page, CDNow does not. This may or may not explain some of CCI's excessive download time on that page.

I also noticed the different pricing structures. CCI had every CD, whether it was a CD single, full length CD or a double CD for $10.99 (the box set isn't priced yet). All selections, regardless of age or popularity, were $10.99. With CDNow, the CDs appeared in accordance with both. His older and very popular albums were priced at $11.49. His less popular older ones were $9.49, and the one that really sucked was $6.49. The newer ones were more expensive, with the latest ones going for $16.49.

So as a CD buyer what would I do? Definitely comparison shop with both sites. If I'm buying older CDs, it appears CDNow would give me a better deal. If I'm buying newer ones, then CCI offers a huge advantage.

I assume that a good percentage of CDs sold these days are for newer titles. (Does anyone know sure?) If so, CCI will have a definite and clear advantage with the majority of sales.
