Those companies you are furious at are the scammers. They must unfold it in a certain way to get the max suckers. Like a fish net?

What you need are some contrarian funds, also called bottom feeder funds. They look in depressed areas for turnaround/startup speculations. The big problem is they want to own you body and soul when you are at the unproven grassroots level. More $$ needs to come from your comrads in the deal to explore and do work to show what is there. You can then get a far better deal(or find out that it is barren) once you know something about it. If your partners can devote some time (in a cooler season) to tramping the desert to mark lines, rent mag and other equipment to run along these lines you can avoid fees paid to others and make a joint holiday of it with work towards a common goal you can reach some of these objectives at minimal costs.
The USGS(US geological service) at usgs.gov is charged with providing satellite maps etc at the cost of reproduction to US citizens and satellite views and radar sat views are especially usfeul in exploring these desert areas. The oblique sun angle(artificial) by the radar sats are good for finding faults.

Sort of the old prospector and his mule type of effort.
