This isn't the type of news I wanted to wake up to this morning when I read my morning paper. I hope this is just more ignorant reporting from the writer of this story.

You are correct in your hopes. Banks use 128 bits security for financial transactions , which is billions of billions time stronger than in the reported case with 56 bits.
To make life easier, for viewing bills some banks use, I believe, 42 bits encryption, but it wouldn't cause any damage even if it's cracked. Money can't change hands. Picture has only account number, no names.
