US GOV has said that Win 3.1 must be upgraded. I'm not sure of the details, but Windows 3.1 is not Y2k compliant. This, of course, only applies to US agencies and I suppose companies which do certain business with the Government. My question-- this will spur a round of upgrades-- will Novell benefit?

NT5 and Novell

Everyone underestimates the two tools of the Microsoft trade. The first is called unfair competition, that is, when they go to the client and say if you go with old Novell over there then use schedule B for your purchases. In fact I'd love to hear of all the unfair competition practices that Microsoft has used to date against Novell aired publically.

The second tool is FUD. Everyone assumes that NT5 will be late late late giving Novell two quarters out of the gate. Do you really think Gates will let that happen? Look what happened with the browser wars.

ITs very clear that Novell has captured back a significant amount of mindshare based upon stability, NDS, and Schmidt but Microsoft is capable of using these two tools to undermine the best of efforts.

What does Novell do if just when they announce Netware 5.0 release, Microsoft comes up with an improved release of their directory in a new BETA? I just think I would be looking very carefully if I were at Novell at both of these Microsoft tools.
