Network Computing Programs Based on Sun's Java Technology Span the Globe; Sun Wins New Finance, Telecommunications Customers, Gains Alliance With Multinational Integrator PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 20, 1998--Sun Microsystems, Inc., a leading provider of enterprise computing solutions, today announced systems integrator e-services and two new internationally-based customers -- Scotiabank and The China Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (China Telecom) -- who are leveraging Sun's Java(TM) technology to achieve significant business performance results. Hailing from the finance, telecommunications and network integration industries, these companies are representative of key market segments poised to realize the cost, administration, security and software development and deployment benefits associated with Sun's Java technology. "These customer wins are indicative of the progress Sun's Java technology is making on a worldwide scale," said Steve Tirado, director of product marketing, Network Computing Systems at Sun Microsystems. "By offering network computing tools and resources based on Java technology, including forming alliances with other vendors when necessary, Sun strives to provide a complete solution that can help companies in a range of industries more effectively address the needs of their own customers." Scotiabank Canada's Scotiabank turned to Sun Microsystems for the development of a new solution based on Java technology to enhance its Mutual Funds Order Entry System (MFOES). Together they have implemented a pilot system based on Java technology, including JavaStation(TM) network computers, allowing for the distribution of new services across multiple channels using a single infrastructure. "Sun's JavaStation network computers are ideal clients for transactional workers accessing a finite set of applications. They are inexpensive to acquire and operate, reducing the overall cost of ownership," said Gail Smith, senior vice president at Scotiabank. "Since they are reliable and stateless, JavaStation NCs are also field replacable without loss of critical data." China Telecom The China Ministry of Post and Telecommunications operates and manages the expanding telecommunications industry throughout the People's Republic of China, serving over 1.2 billion customers. It is responsible for the construction, deployment and maintenance of all telecommunications services and networks for the entire nation. China Telecom is using Sun's Java technology to transform their operations into an e-business model and take advantage of centralized management and rapid application deployment. "Using Sun's Java technology, we were able to partner with Sanga International to complete a project that would have typically taken over three years in just nine months," said CHUI Wai-Leung, project director at The China Ministry of Post and Telecommunications. "Sanga's Web-based packaged solutions supported our requirement to implement change rapidly and adapt quickly to changes in the electronic business environment." e-services Headquartered in Italy, e-services provides enterprise network computing solutions based on Java technology and integration services to a broad range of customers throughout Europe. The e-services solution is designed using 100% Pure Java components in a client-agnostic architecture called Libero ("Free" in Italian). First customer implementations of this system include a sales force automation application for a European multinational pharmaceutical company. "Application design and deployment time is particularly fast in the 100% Pure Java(TM) verified environment," said Luciano Case, marketing manager, e-services. "That and the simplistic management and operational model of the JavaStation network computer are factors which contribute greatly to help enterprise customers recognize significant cost advantages, both in the development and operational phases."
