Charles,

There is a myth that is propagated on these threads that heap leaching was black box at one time. There are records of copper mines using heap leaching on oxide ores back in the 20's and 30's. Uranium was heap leached in the 60's. The gold companies always knew about some of these low grade deposits. They fire assayed just fine. However, when gold was controlled at $35 per oz by Uncle Sam, they were not economical. It was after this restriction was lifted that heap leaching of gold commenced.

More on platinum later.

Charles,

Platinum was discovered in 1735 in South America. At that time it was used primarily for jewlry. The rest, as they say, is history.
